Aughrim is a small village in east Galway. The area was the scene of a battle in 1691 between King William of Orange and King James 2nd which resulted in changing the course of Irish history thus putting Aughrim on the historical map of Ireland.
The battle sites are clearly marked and are attractive to locals and tourists alike. The Aughrim Heritage Centre commemorates the battle and offers much insight into life in Aughrim village in the late 1600’s.
